San Marino, Europe
When planning for this road trip we noticed that we would be passing the small country of San Marino which lies within Italy. Studying the history of this tiny state we knew we had to visit it. We stayed for two nights which gave us a full day to explore the ancient city and the main castle which are located high up on the hill.

Walking up the mountain
It is pretty easy to find accommodation in San Marino, but visiting the ancient city and castle high up on the hill, requires walking up the mountain. There are however three sets of elevators that can be used to get there and back. The views are absolutely stunning which makes it all very worthwhile.
Cava dei Balestrieri
An interesting piece of history in the ancient city of San Marino is the Cava dei Balestrieri or crossbowmen's quarry. It is used for various open air exibitions, including a traditional crossbow competition during (middle age) costume festivals.
Strolling through the old streets
Strolling through the old streets of the ancient city of San Marino. The amount of history here is phenomenal. Definitely recommended to go here.

Looking at the second tower (De La Fratta or Seconda Torre - Cesta) while strolling around in the main castle of the ancient city of San Marino. Excellent views all around.
