Caribbean cruise (2023)
My wife and I escaped the winter in the Netherlands and spent it in Florida, USA where the temperature is a lot better. At the start of our extended stay we went on a Caribbean cruise covering Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands), Aruba, Curaçao and Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands). We travelled with our favourite cruise line on the Norwegian Dawn.

Pretty pink window
The first stop on our Caribbean cruise was in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. In stead of walking around we opted for a city tour which we would show us the most important highlights. Paseo de Doña Blanca is one of them, a street that is totally pink.
So many umbrellas
While walking around in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic the Calle San Felipe is a must visit street. It is well known for its many colourful umbrellas. Truly a sight to make anyone happy.
The corner house
One of the best things in the Caribbean is the relaxed atmosphere and the beautifully coloured houses. This here is a nice example of a corner house in the city of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
Half a sunset
While the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship prepared to leave St. Thomas on the US Virgin Islands we were anxiously awaiting the sunset. It was a bit disappointing that dark clouds moved in but this half sunset came out pretty well after all. I find it quite pleasing to look at.
Trying to survive on Aruba
After the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship docked in Aruba, I walked around the ship and noticed this small part of green trying to survive in the turquoise water. It got me in quite the relaxing mode.
Walking between the rocks
The cruise on the Norwegian Dawn brought us to Aruba. The tour guide brought us to the Casibari rock formations, an area of huge rocks in the middle of the island. Nice place to walk around in and climb to the top for the island view.
Lighthouse window
Lighthouses always fascinate me. So when we got the chance to visit the California Lighthouse on the island of Aruba we went there. I liked the windows in this one and wondered who is actually ever looking through those.
Safely fastened
It is always fascinating to see how cruise ships dock and get fastened. Just a few of those ropes is enough to keep it in place apparently. This here is in Willemstad on the island of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles.
The Norwegian Dawn
Everytime me and my wife are on a cruise we are enchanted by the beauty of the cruise ships we are on. Complete with shops, a spa, swimming pools, many restaurants and a theatre it's truly amazing to know these 'cities' can float around at sea. Here is the Norwegian Dawn docked in Willemstad, Curaçao.
Approaching the Queen Emma bridge
After the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship arrived in Willemstad, Curaçao, we decided to walk to the centre of town as we had been there before a couple of times and know where to go. Here we are approaching the Queen Emma bridge with the famous Handelskade in the background.
The Queen Emma pontoon bridge
Spending the day in Willemstad, Curaçao enjoying all it has to offer. The Queen Emma pontoon bridge is one of the highlights as it quite an extraordinary bridge. Here it moves aside to let a yacht pass.
Waiting for our return
After a long day of walking around in Willemstad, Curaçao it was time to go back to the ship. The Norwegian Dawn was shining in the midday sun and patiently waiting for our return.
People coming off the cruise ships
Cruise ships cannot always dock and people will need tender boats to get off and on the ship. Here in Grand Cayman, one of the Cayman Islands local shuttles were used.
Quick stop at a liquor store
I had an excursion on Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands and it stopped at a liquor store. Totally not interesting in itself, but the sculpture outside was kinda funny. Pirates are a big attraction on the Cayman Islands apparently.
Welcome to Hell
Grand Cayman on the Cayman Islands has an interesting place called Hell. It's actually a small piece of awesome pinnacles made of black-covered limestone, but the name is well chosen. There's even a post office where you can send a postcard with a stamp from Hell. It also sounds nice that I can say I went to Hell and live to tell about it.
Jagged pinnacles
Well, I went to Hell (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and this is what hell is supposed to look like apparently. These jagged, spongy pinnacles of black-covered limestone looked amazing. I did miss some fire though.
Colourful city living
Enjoying a relaxed city walk in George Town (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands). The sun in combination with the lovely coloured houses always make me happy.
