The Bahamas (2014)

While staying in Orlando we decided to go on a short cruise to the Bahamas. Only two islands with the first one being Grand Bahama Island where we rented a car. Bit of a hassle but it gave us the freedom to visit some places outside of the obvious tourist places. The second stop was at the city of Nassau on New Providence Island.

Leaving for paradise

An hour after leaving the port of Cape Canaveral on the cruise ship Carnival Sensation we were on our way to Paradise. We spent some time on deck to watch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.

Sun's almost gone

Well on our way to The Bahamas on the cruise ship Carnival Sensation we enjoyed a perfect sunset on the Atlantic Ocean. We just love to see the sun slowly dropping into the ocean.

The yellow kayaks

When the cruise ship arrived at Grand Bahama Island on The Bahamas we rented a car for the few hours we could spend on the island. It provided us with a lot more flexibility than any of the standard excursions. Our first stop for some coffee was at Paradise Cove. It's a place where you can rent some kayaks and we loved the yellow kayaks this man was towing ashore.

Conch graveyard

While spending time on Grand Bahama Island on The Bahamas the conch shell is hard to ignore. The conch is considered the country’s national dish. It is served in a variety of ways: as fritters, eaten raw, breaded and fried (cracked conch) or as a salad. But what to do with the huge amount of conch shells once the meat has been taken out? Near the town of West End we found a few conch shell deposit areas or conch graveyards as you might call them.

Waiting for the bus

While driving around on Grand Bahama Island on The Bahamas we noticed this colourful bus stop. Just like many of the houses the bus stops are also painted in familiar Caribbean colours. Waiting for the bus sure is fun like that.

Manoeuvring the rocks

When visiting Grand Bahama Island on The Bahamas we really wanted to find a picture perfect beach that we had always seen in brochures. It took a while but we managed to find on on the east side of the island. Manoeuvring the rocks was fun to do and the beach itself looked amazing.

Gotta love this beach

Finding a both accessible and beautiful beach on Grand Bahama Island in The Bahamas was not an easy task we had set for ourselves. We drove quite a distance towards the east of the island and finally managed to find this one. We absolutely loved this beach.

Curly banisters

Strolling around in Downtown Nassau on The Bahamas was nice and relaxing. We loved all the colours and although most houses could use a bit of work there are some really nice ones. We particularly loved the curly banisters on this one.

Working on the steps

While walking around in Nassau in The Bahamas we noticed this old man sitting on these steps making a living for himself by sculpturing a piece of wood into something beautiful.

Local police

The Caribbean is known for its wonderful pastel-coloured buildings and in Nassau on The Bahamas it's not much different. Even the local police station is painted mint-green. We loved it!

The Queen's staircase

The capital city Nassau on The Bahamas does not have a lot of nature within the city limits, but The Queen's staircase is a positive exception. The stairs are located at Fort Fincastle Historic Complex near Bennet's Hill in Downtown Nassau. The 66 steps staircase has water cascading to a pool below, along the side over series of steps. At the bottom a walkway goes between high stone walls, tropical plants and trees.
